Who Is AG Perarivalan?
He is a 50 years old Indian man who is best known for convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Along with Murugan and Santhan, two other convicts of the same case, he is currently serving a life sentence. He was born on 30th July 1971 in Tamil Nadu, India. As of the time of his arrest, he had completed his Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering. He also completed his bachelor’s degree in computer applications and a master’s degree in computer applications through the Indira Gandhi National Open University while in prison.

Supreme Court decision may pave the way for the release of the other six convicts, including Nalini Sriharan and her husband Murugan, a Sri Lankan national, in the case. AG Perarivalan, on the other hand, has been behind bars since the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, though he has been free for the past 31 years. Under Article 142 of the Constitution, the case should be released pursuant to the decisions of the cabinet. The Supreme Court’s special powers should be invoked in this regard,” the judges said led by Justice L Nageswara Rao.

The batteries were in the bomb that was used to accomplish the assassination. Initially, Perarivalan was sentenced to death in 1998 by a court investigating terrorism. A year later, the Supreme Court affirmed the judgment but reduced it to life imprisonment in 2014. In March of this year, the same court had granted him bail.
Observing that the Tamil Nadu Governor has a cabinet decision dictating that all seven of the convicts should be pardoned under Section 161 of the Constitution, the court made the decision to not wait for the President’s response, despite the fact that the Governor had sent the file to the President.
