When Will Children Under 5 Be Able To Get The Covid Vaccines?: There is currently no covid vaccine available for very young children in the United States, but the approval is expected within the next month. Here is what you need to know about the vaccine – including why it is still important for kids already exposed to covid.
It is expected that the FDA will approve the Covid-19 vaccines for children under 5 next month, and the vaccines will become available within a few weeks. Covid-19 vaccines for people aged 16 and older were approved by US and UK authorities in early December 2020; within days, shots were going into arms. This was achieved less than a year after this virus was identified – making it the fastest vaccine development in history.
When Will Children Under 5 Be Able To Get The Covid Vaccines?
Researchers suggested that a vaccine given to children between the ages of 5 and 11 offered almost no protection against infection in a preprint published in February. During December 2021 and January 2022, the researchers conducted their study. Over the course of that time, the vaccine’s ability to protect kids against infection declined from 68% to 12%.
In adolescents, protection dropped from 66% at the start to 51% by the end of the study, according to the researchers. Its ability to reduce the risk of hospitalization for children aged 12-17 dropped from 85% in mid-December to 73% in late January. The number dropped from 100% to 48% for children aged 5 to 11. Researchers write that the data are not surprising. In trials with other vaccines, kids of the same ages also received two doses, similar results have been observed “to some degree” in trials with an earlier Covid-19 variant, BioNTech and Pfizer argue.
