What Is The Airport:- Jeremy Spake shot to fame in the 1990s when he starred in the long-running series Airport, one of the BBC’s very first flying shows. At the time, he was working as a ground handling manager for the Russian airline Aeroflot. But he’s now back at Heathrow as airport manager, taking us behind the scenes as the aviation industry recovers from the pandemic for a new six-part series.
When is The Airport: Back in the Skies?
The airport: back in the sky is a six-part series which begins on BBC One on Monday, May 9 at 8.30 pm.
Episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer after transmission.
What is The Airport: Back in the Skies about?
The series sees Jeremy welcomed by the CEO of Heathrow and major airlines to learn about the realities and key challenges they face. He spends time with their teams working in front-line roles throughout the airport and aircraft – from engineers to airside operations managers, from lounge hosts to pilots, from cabin crew retraining after layoffs to passengers panicked navigating through their numerous passenger locator forms.
“While Covid has been truly devastating to the airline industry globally, it also offers our first chance in over 20 years to reaffirm high standards, exceptional service quality, and perhaps most importantly, we provide an opportunity to press the reset button, being under-promising and overflowing for customers wanting to reconnect with others face-to-face,” says Jeremy. “I’m delighted to be back at Heathrow and well safe at BBC One!”
What has Jeremy been up to since the 1990s airport series?
Jeremy may not have been on our screens, but he sure has been busy! “I’ve traveled the world, working for airlines and airports in various management positions,” he reveals. “It’s been a busy 20 years!
“The show had a huge impact on my life back then. Even now I get asked, ‘Aren’t you that guy? The airport series?’ We went from day-to-day work to being household names. It changed my life!”
