“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” demonstrates that the “Fantastic Beasts” series will continue to be unappealing until it reaches its conclusion.

The third part in the ongoing “Fantastic Beasts” series of “Harry Potter” spinoff films, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” was released on Friday. With a budget of $200 million and a first-weekend gross of $43 million, the film proved to be the most successful in what appears to be a declining franchise.

Review Of The Secrets of Dumbledore Ratings

The film follows Hogwarts professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), and their team of witches and wizards in “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.” The unusual alliance attempts to stop the ascension of Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen), a powerful dark wizard who seeks to rule both the magical and non-magical worlds by inciting a war between “muggles” — or humans — and wizards.

The Secrets of Dumbledore Review

Many expected this film’s screenplay to surpass that of its predecessor, “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” thanks to the return of “Harry Potter” screenwriter Steve Kloves. Despite the fact that all has been accomplished, there is an obvious struggle to create a meaningful build-up to the hinted-at showdown between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, which is scheduled to take place in the next film.

Furthermore, the writers did not appear to be interested in correcting the previous film’s flaws or addressing some of its discarded subplots. Instead, they let the film stand on its own, which turned out to be a wise option because the plot was easier to follow despite a few glitches.

However, there are still plenty of positive things to say about this film, as it is an enjoyable watch and a welcome return to the Wizarding World. Mikkelsen performs an excellent job in his new role as Grindelwald, and the resting look of disgust on his face is appropriate for the character. As Scamander’s muggle friend Jacob Kowalski, Dan Fogler continues to add a much-needed humorous touch to the story.

Overview Of The Secrets of Dumbledore Movie

Composer James Newton Howard delivered a score that elevated not only the high-action fight scenes but the film as a whole. Musical scores have gone hand-in-hand with the success of the “Harry Potter” franchise over the years, and Howard’s decision to incorporate past scores from the original series into the soundtrack was much-appreciated fan service.

Despite its improved acting and solid score, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” shows the “Fantastic Beasts” series is not sure what it wants from itself or for its audience. The relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore is the sole focus of the film, and although there is an interesting story to be told there, the plot too often caters to other ideas.
