Major Suman Gawani has been selected for the prestigious United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award. She has been working with the Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) as the Peacekeeper in 2019. She is going to receive the award from the Antonio Guterres during an Online Ceremony. Antonio Guterres is the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The Online Ceremony is going to be organized at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. The ceremony is going to be held on Friday on the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. She has served as a military Observer from November 2018 to December 2019. Also, she was the focal point of contact for gender issues for military observers in the mission.
Major Suman Gawani helped in encouraging the joint military patrols. Further, this will help in managing the Gender Balance. She has supported the gender balance irrespective of the extreme conditions in the filed. Further, Major Suman Gawani also played an essential role in integrating the gender perspective into military activities and planning in the mission, the Army said.
She has attended the specialized training on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV) at Nairobi. Also, she has participated in numerous UN Forum. Where she has beautifully demonstrated as to how the gender perspective can help in protecting the civilians from conflict-related sexual violence, she has trained South Sudan Government and forces on the issues related to the Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV).
Brazilian Naval officer, Carla Monteiro de Castro Araujo is also going to receive the award on the same occasion.
