M.P. Veerendra Kumar Passes Away

The leader of Lok Tantrik Janta Dal (LJD) and the Rajya Sabha MP Veerendra Kumar passed away. He passed away on Thursday night after a cardiac arrest. The 83 years old Veerendra Kumar was the Former Union Minister of State for Finance. He was also the Managing Director of the Mathrubhumi group of publications. He took his last breath in the Private Hospital where he was admitted.

Early Life

MP Veerendra Kumar was born in Kalpetta, which is in the Wayanad district of Kerala. His father was a socialist leader and planter MK Padmaprabha Goudar and Mother Marudevi Avva. Subsequently, he took his further education at Kalpetta and Kozhikode. After this, he went to Madras for taking his Master’s degree from Vivekanand College in Philosophy. He completed his MBA from Cincinnati University, located in Ohio, USA.

Political Career

He got the membership from Jayprakas Narayan in the Socialist Party. Further, he worked as all-India treasurer of the Samyukta Socialist Party from 1968 to 1970. Subsequently, he joined the Janta Party and the Janta Dal. Mr. Veerendra Kumar was sent to jail during the Emergency, and his property was confiscated. He became the MLA in the year 1987 and the forest Minister of Forests in the Cabinet of E.K Nayanar, and he resigned within 48 from his post. He gave his first order against the cutting of the trees.

Mr. Veerendra Kumar won his first Lok Sabha election in the year 1996 from Kozhikde. Subsequently, he became the Union Minister of State for Finance. Further, he became the Union Minister of State for Labour in the United Front governments led by HD Deve Gowda and IK Gujral. He again became the Lok Sabha member in the year 2004, for the second time. In the year 2016,  he became the Rajya Sabha member.

At various times, he had been part of the Janata Dal (Secular), Socialist Janata (Democratic), Janata Dal (United) as well as the LJD. He became the Director of the Mathrubhumi group of publications in the late 1970s. Further, during the mid-1980s, he took charge of the management of the Mathrubhumi group of papers. He had some associations with the Press Trust of India and the Indian Newspaper Society. He had written various books on Politics, Philosophy, and the Economy. Currently, his son MV Shreyams Kumar is the State President of LJD.
