On Sunday, a gunman opened fire inside a Southern California church, killing one person and critically wounding four others, before being overpowered by congregation members, who then hogtied him, preventing further bloodshed. A shooting occurred at about 1:26 pm inside the Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, California, about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles, a community largely comprised of retirees and one that has a large Asian population. After a shooting at a church in the Laguna Woods area of Orange County, at least five persons were wounded, four critically and one with minor injuries, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Taiwanese-born victims made up the majority of those injured, although investigators were still determining if it was a targeted attack, said Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined. According to her, four of the victims are in critical condition, and another one is being treated for minor injuries. According to her, the bodies of four victims have been found inside the church. According to the Sheriff’s Department, the hospitalized patients are four Asian men ranging in age from 66 to 92 and an 86-year-old Asian woman. The conditions of the patients were not immediately known. 

Due to the ongoing investigation, the hospital is not releasing the condition of the individuals. All questions regarding the incident should be directed to Orange County Sheriff’s Department. According to OCSD, a gun possibly used in the shooting was recovered on the scene. Police sources told NBC News at least one handgun was recovered at the scene. Police said two total guns were recovered from the scene at a press conference at 5 p.m. Both were serialized and were not ghost weapons. There will be between 30 and 40 witnesses to be interviewed, including those who were inside the church at the time, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
