Kanye Omari West, an American Rapper known for a ton of controversies, and the owner of YEEZY, fashion collaboration with German sportswear Adidas has brought about another very controversial update. YEEZY X Adidas was formed in 2013 and since then they’ve been branding high end shoes claimed to be extremely comfortable under the brand name “YEEZY BOOST”.
YEEZY X Adidas’ latest collection YEEZY BOOST 350 V2, launched on August 22nd, 2020, has two shoes named after Islamic Archangels “ISRAFIL” and “AZRAEL” catching unwanted attention from the Muslim community.
According to Islam, Israfil is the Archangel who is said to blow the trumpet on Doomsday and then again on the beginning of the Day of Judgement.
Azrael (aka the Malk-Al Maut) the “Archangel of Death”, is believed to take the soul of the dead to Heaven or Hell. He is also believed to be known as the Grim Reaper.
Muslims from all over the world are offended by the fact that the Angels (aka Farishta in urdu) of the highest rank are disrespected by this act. People across many countries are taking it to twitter and even a petition is being circulated on social media “To change the name of Yeezy Israfil.” The petition is already signed by more than 2000 people and has started a stir of boycott of their line of trainers.
The Yeezy’s price range from $200-$4,000 (INR 14,000 to 3,00,000). The “Israfil” white colorway, and “Azrael” Black colorway have a price tag of USD $220 (INR 16,088). This edition of the Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 features a Bluish Grey and Sandy Yellow Prime knit upper with a Pale Yellow stripe on the lateral side. A semi-translucent Grey midsole atop a Gum rubber outsole completes the design.
Another of Yeezy’s internet breaking Trainer “YEEZY Foam Runner” is named “Ararat” which has a biblical reference to ‘the land beyond the great river’. Ararat debuted in London Fashion week in February 2020. Even this product has a mind-boggling price tag of USD $324 (INR 23,693). Launched on 26th of June 2020, with a stock of 900 trainers, they got sold out within ten minutes. They are claimed to be made of some kind of harvested Algae.
This whole collection has a list of names having biblical, Hebrew or Islamic reference. Some of them being:
West is also under multiple Lawsuits of worth more than 500,000 USD. Allegedly claimed to be not paying his workers their proper wages.
While some around the world think of these as cool or aesthetic names, some find themselves offended under their religious sentiments.
