Gaylord, Michigan: Tornado causes Catastrophic Damage in Michigan, killing 1, injuring more than 40

Gaylord, Michigan: Officials reported one death and 43 injuries in the town of Gaylord in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula, as a tornado moved quickly through the town Friday afternoon. According to Lt. Jim Gorno of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the scene in that area was “catastrophic” with cars flipped over and buildings destroyed.

According to Brian Lawson, spokesperson for Munson Healthcare, 23 people were treated at Otsego Memorial Hospital and 12 at Grayling Hospital, and eight other people were treated at other hospitals outside of Munson.

The city is under a curfew until 8 a.m., officials said.

As a result of the tornado, Gaylord, a community of around 4,200 people, about 230 miles northwest of Detroit, was placed under an overnight curfew on Friday night and residents were instructed to shelter in place. As a result of the tornado, 23 people were injured and one person was killed at Gaylord-Otsego Memorial Hospital, Munson Healthcare spokesman Brian Lawson told WOSU. It was unclear what the injured person’s condition was or what the deceased person’s name was. By Friday evening, Lawson said, the number of people being brought to the hospital had slowed.

Friday night, the roof of a Hobby Lobby was ripped off, and the town was deserted. The traffic lights stopped working, and only emergency vehicles were visible. Multiple homes were damaged and trees, and powerlines were down and blocking roads, State Police said on Twitter
